Update on Kianna

Well, the last few days have been a bit rough for Naomi and I. For some of you that dont know, Kianna was admitted in the Children's Stollery Hospital Intensive Care Unit at U of A on Sunday. It turns out she was distended: Intestinal obstruction involves a partial or complete blockage of the bowel that results in the failure of the intestinal contents to pass through.

She hadnt pooped since she was born so we were a bit concerned. We had a health care nurse come to visit us on Sunday and she told us to immediately go to the Stollery Childrens Hospital. We are very thankful that she told us that. When we got there the doctor told us it was either Hirschsprungs Disease http://www.pullthrough.org/Hirschsprungs.html or a Meconium Plug Meconium plug syndrome, also termed functional immaturity of the colon, is a transient disorder of the newborn colon characterized by delayed passage (>24-48 h) of meconium and intestinal dilatation (see Image 1). Contrast enema demonstrates the retained meconium as a filling defect or plug (see Image 2) that produces a double-contrast effect. Small left colon syndrome is a subset of meconium plug syndrome in which an enema demonstrates an apparent transition zone between the dilated and the normal-to-decreased caliber distal colon at the splenic flexure.

If it was Hirshprungs then that would mean surgery and if it was the plug then it would just take time to get here bowel going. So thats pretty much the scoop. It looks like its just the plug since Kianna is bottle feeding today the 27th. They are going to observe her over night and then make a decision if she needs surgery or not.

Anyways, I know that a lot of people are praying for her and Naomi and I would like to thank all of you for that.
